SUMMARY

To live authentically we have to let go of the false feeling of having everything figured that is inspired by routines and set ourselves free to experience every moment of our lives with all its newness and uniqueness.

MAIN CONTENT

Generally we all are inclined to establish our own patterns of behavior and routines or conform to already existing ones. It is much easier this way since all we need is to train ourselves to follow the said patterns or routines and soon enough we do not even have to think about anything really provided it falls within the provisions of our chosen pattern of behavior or routine. Soon enough the patterns of behavior and routines that we follow become “our way of doing things” which in most cases we also interpret as “what works”.

By taking away the burden of having to think through every situation we encounter as though it was new and unlived, patterns of behavior and routines are adopted and developed on the assumption that every situation and the circumstances specific to it are in no way different to other experiences we or others have had before. This often means that we overlook the unique circumstances specific to our said situations and attempt to fill them in with the circumstances of a similar situation we have experienced in the past.

The notion that we can continually and progressively become better individuals or realize better lives by living today as though it was yesterday is hugely mistaken and a great disservice to ourselves. Every situation that we encounter bears a unique set of circumstances that we need to be fully aware of and alert to if we are to authentically live through it. We do not have to assume anything we just need to consciously take everything in and think.

This way we can start to actually live first because we no longer suffer from the hangover of how we lived through yesterday and secondly because nothing is figured out for us. We are neither attached to our past nor the people that we were then and that means that we set ourselves free to experience today in the best possible way we can.

This also means that we let go we of our biases and prejudices against ourselves, others and life in general and that is because we are ready to let go of all that we think we know and take in the moment with all its novelty and uniqueness. It also means that we detach ourselves from the people we think we are and redefine ourselves anew to be the best we can possibly be in the moment.

Having to think through and experience every situation as though we had never experienced it will of course demand more from us. We will have to let go of the erroneous assumption that all is clear and figured out and do the actual figuring out for ourselves. It will mean that we get more involved in determining and choosing what is best for ourselves as well as investigating and establishing what is true and what is false. This we can only achieve if we accept that what we actually know about life, ourselves and others is negligible and it is not adequate for us to confidently claim that we have everything figured out.

Without accepting our foolishness, we cannot adequately awaken our curiosity and desire to investigate. To really know we have to let go of our assumption of knowledge. We have to perceive, investigate, question, determine and establish more. What we accept and conform to we have to criticize to the core and see whether it is really a worthy foundation.

  • In conclusion while routines and patterns of behavior inspire confidence and seem to make life easier, they could also be the reason we just go through the motions without really experiencing life as it really is. To live authentically we have to let go of the false feeling of having everything figured that is inspired by routines and set ourselves free to experience every moment of our lives with all its newness and uniqueness.
